Geo-information Science and Technology

Our Department conduct cutting-edge research in the Earth-related information collection, processing, and imaging across the Earth surface, the near-surface, and the deep interior. We focus on geophysical and remote sensing techniques, and aim to provide our students with high quality education and diverse research opportunities.

Brief History

Zhejiang University started to offer master’s program in remote sensing geology in 1984. The discipline of applied geophysics was founded in 1999 by Shizhe Xu, the prominent Chinese geophysicist. Later, the degree programs in Geo-information Science and Technology was authorized through the integration of applied geophysics, remote sensing, and geographical information science. In 2015, Department of Geo-information Science and Technology was established within School of Earth Sciences.

Our department currently has 17 faculty members, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences,7 professors, 3 tenure-track professors, 6 associate professors, and 1 assistant professor.

The department offers undergraduate program in Geo-information Science and Technology, and master’s and doctoral program in Resources Exploration and Geophysics. The academic programs encompass the study of physics, mathematics, geology, computer science, signal processing, etc. Our graduates have entered high-tech companies such as Huawei and Alibaba, government agencies such as Ministry of Nature Resources and Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and world top petroleum enterprises such as China Petroleum and SINOPEC.

Research Area

Our department is aiming to discover the lithosphere and its role in mineralization and supplying fossil energy, explore the near-surface process associated with human activities, achieve scientific management of the land, and reduce the natural hazards by dynamically mapping the surface variation with multi-source data. Our researches focus on imaging methods with rigorous mathematics, modern physics and up-to-date computing techniques. Our department is taking the leading position nationwide in sensing our dynamic and multi-scale planet. Our publications can be found in international mainstream journals such as Science, Nature Geoscience, Journal of Geophysical Research, Geophysics, Geophysical Research Letters, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Surveys in Geophysics, Geophysical Journal International, and Journal of Applied Geophysics.
