In order to foster the academic and educational collaboration between Zhejiang University (ZJU) and University of Hawaii-Manoa (UHM), "Zhejiang University (ZJU)-University of Hawaii-Manoa(UHM) Bilateral Workshop on Research Frontier in Earth Science"s was held from March 23rd to March 24th, 2015.
The workshop is hosted by School of Earth Sciences at ZJU, and chaired jointly by Professor Hanlin Chen, Dean of School of Earth Sciences at ZJU,and Professor Brian Taylor, vice president at UHM and Professor Brian Taylor, Dean of School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST). 9 faculty members from UHM, including Chris Ostrander, associated Dean at SOEST, and Kenneth Rubin, associated Dean at Department of geology and geophysical sciences attended the workshop. Associate Dean of Foreign Affairs, Xu Ying from ZJU, and more than 20 faculty members and more than 30 students from School of Earth Sciences, ZJU also attended the workshop.
On the opening ceremony, Xu Ying delivered the opening speech to welcome the delegation from UHM, followed by Professor Hanlin Chen and Brian Taylor, who gave introduction of the School of Earth Sciences, ZJU, SOEST, and UHM respectively.
After the opening ceremony, during the next one and a half day more than 20 faculty members from ZJU and UHM presented their research in the frontier area of geology, geophysics, and atmospheric sciences. Faculty members and students also exchanged ideas in a variety of research areas.
In the afternoon of March 24th, faculty members from ZJU and UHM hold a side meeting on the 3+X program that is designed to supervise undergraduate students jointly by ZJU and UHM in the major of Earth sciences. The faculty members from both universities introduced their undergraduate program and exchanged their ideas on undergraduate education. After an extensive discussion, Professor Hanlin Chen and Brian Taylor signed the memorandum of the ZJU-UHM joint 3+X program.
In the morning of 25th, March Professor Brian Taylor visited Zijinggang campus and had discussion with students from School of Earth Sciences. First, Professor Brian Taylor presented the introduction of SOEST, and then faculty members from SOEST answered different questions from students. Faculty members and students had lively discussions on research, teaching, learning, and life.
During the visit of UHM, vice president of ZJU, Professor Weidong Luo met the UHM delegation. Professor Luo introduced Zhejiang University briefly to UHM delegation and provided suggestions on future collaboration between ZJU and UHM.
The two-day workshop helps to foster the collaboration between the two universities. It is expected that the two university will work together to build up more cooperations in the future.
