Lectures on the Basin Formation and Lithosphere Heterogeneity by Prof. Hans Thybo and Prof. Irina Artemieva

On June 3, 2024, Prof. Hans Thybo and Prof. Irina Artemieva, elected members of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea, and fellows of the Geological Society of America, were invited by Dr. Haibin Yang to visit the School of Earth Sciences at Zhejiang University. During their visit, they delivered engaging lectures to the faculty and students.

Professor Hans Thybo gave a lecture titled "From Mantle Dynamics to Continental Rifting and Basin Subsidence," in which he provided insightful analysis of different types of basins around the world. He shared his recent research, which focuses on sedimentary basin formation and seismic deep structures to gain a better understanding of the dynamic evolution of a rift basin.

Professor Irina Artemieva presented on "Thermo-Chemical Heterogeneity of Continental Lithosphere," offering a dual perspective on the Earth's lithosphere through thermal structures and chemical compositions. She introduced her new thermal structure model, which reflects the heterogeneity of the Earth's lithosphere and its evolutionary history. She also demonstrated the application of this novel approach in regions such as Greenland and Baikal.

Both professors' lectures were well-received, sparking lively discussions among the audience. Faculty and students actively posed questions and engaged in conversations with the guest speakers. Professors Hans Thybo and Irina Artemieva expressed their delight at their first visit to Hangzhou and their gratitude for the warm reception from the School of Earth Sciences. They also expressed hope for future opportunities to return for further academic visits.
