From July 17 to September 17, 2024, Chen Yixuan, an undergraduate student from the School of Earth Sciences at Zhejiang University, participated in a summer research exchange program at the Department of Geography, The University of Hong Kong (HKU). His research focused on land use change in Shenzhen and the development of the Geographically Weighted Regression (GTWR) software, and he successfully completed the expected tasks.

Under the guidance of Professor Huang Bo, a distinguished chair professor at HKU’s Department of Geography, Chen utilized the ChangeAnalyst software to conduct an in-depth analysis of the spatiotemporal characteristics of land use changes in Shenzhen, exploring the complexity of these changes. His research provided critical support for future land management, urban planning, and environmental protection efforts. Professor Huang’s research interests include spatial statistics, image fusion, and spatial optimization, and he is especially known for developing the GTWR model, which is widely applied in large-scale spatiotemporal data analysis. In this project, Chen also contributed to the development of the GTWR software, revealing the driving forces behind land use changes and their impacts on ecosystems.

Professor Huang Bo, who is a prominent figure in academia, currently serves as the associate editor of the International Journal of Geographical Information Science and has achieved significant accomplishments in various international research projects, including winning a gold medal at the 2021 Geneva International Invention Exhibition. Chen Yixuan expressed that under Professor Huang’s guidance, his research skills were greatly enhanced, and he formed strong collaborative relationships with professors and postdoctoral researchers at HKU.

In addition, Chen actively participated in HKU's rich academic activities. He attended a presentation by Xianping Ma from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) titled "Multimodal Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Remote Sensing Image Semantic Segmentation," which expanded his knowledge in the field of remote sensing image segmentation.

The successful completion of this summer research program not only showcases the professional abilities of Zhejiang University students in the field of Geographic Information Science but also marks a new milestone in the academic collaboration between Zhejiang University and The University of Hong Kong. Moving forward, both institutions will continue to strengthen research cooperation, promoting the application and development of geographic information technologies.
